Windows Delivery Optimization: Why Your Internet Slows Down

For Windows users dealing with an unstable or slow internet connection, the advice is to check the automatic update settings. How-To Geek's editors have highlighted the Delivery Optimization feature, which is designed to help Microsoft roll out updates faster but can also place extra strain on your connection.

Editor Rich Hain explained that this feature functions much like a torrent network. Your computer doesn't just download update pieces from Microsoft's servers or other devices—it also uploads the fragments it has already downloaded to other users. In practice, your PC ends up helping to distribute Windows system files.

Hain was quick to clarify that no personal data is being shared; Microsoft only uses operating system update files. Still, this constant uploading to other devices could slow down your internet, especially if your connection is already unstable or you have a data cap.

The author also noted that he dislikes the fact that Windows assumes by default that your computer should help distribute updates outside your home network. To turn this feature off, you need to open Windows Update, navigate to Advanced options, and select the Delivery Optimization section.
