Playground Games has clarified the fate of the new Fable amid ongoing debates about the future of Xbox exclusives. The studio officially confirmed that the game will launch day one on Xbox Series X|S, Game Pass, Steam, and PlayStation 5. For Microsoft, this is another clear sign: major Xbox projects are increasingly no longer tied solely to its own console ecosystem.

The exact release date hasn't been announced yet, but the window is fall 2026. Earlier rumors suggested a launch between September and December, and Playground Games' recent statement aligns with that. Discussion about platform availability heated up when the gaming community revisited the possibility of stricter exclusivity policies from major console makers.

The PlayStation 5 version also got special attention. Players repeatedly asked if the game would launch simultaneously on Sony's console, and Playground Games confirmed via X that it would. So Fable won't be a timed Xbox exclusive—it will be available to PS5 owners from day one.

The studio also provided details on the game's genre and structure. The new Fable is a single-player open-world RPG with action elements. Players can expect exploration, character customization, a choice-based system that influences the story, and a blend of deep combat and life simulation mechanics.

This release carries extra weight for Playground Games. Known primarily for the Forza Horizon series, the studio sees Fable as a major step towards story-driven RPGs. If the game succeeds across multiple platforms at once, it could serve as a prime example of Xbox's evolving strategy: not just pushing consoles, but bringing its games to players wherever they are.
