A surprising household incident shows that even common gadgets can become a source of danger under the wrong circumstances. A Reddit user shared a story about how charging gaming accessories nearly caused a fire in their apartment.

The incident was posted by a user with the handle Toikka. According to their account, they were charging a Steam Controller near a Google Pixel smartwatch with a metal band. At some point, the metal accidentally touched the exposed contacts of the charger.

This caused a short circuit—the charger began to heat up and emit a distinct hissing sound. The user noticed the issue quickly and managed to prevent anything worse. After the incident, the watch's metal band showed signs of overheating and discoloration.

The poster emphasized that they don't blame the device manufacturers, attributing the situation solely to careless placement of the gear during charging. In their view, the combination of exposed contacts and nearby metal objects can lead to overheating or even fire.

Cases like this are a reminder that chargers and electronics need careful handling. It's especially important not to leave metal accessories, cables, or other items nearby that could accidentally short-circuit the contacts.
