Oura has unveiled the next generation of its smart ring, the Oura Ring 5, with a stronger focus on comfort alongside health. The device is 40% smaller than its predecessor, bringing it much closer in size to a conventional ring. The width has been reduced from 7.99 mm to 6.09 mm, and the thickness from 2.88 mm to 2.29 mm, addressing a key complaint about earlier models.

Despite the slimmer design, Oura claims up to a week of battery life. To maintain that, the company reworked the mechanical structure, electronics, optical sensors, battery, and measurement system. A new signal architecture is also on board, featuring improved skin contact, brighter LEDs, and 12 enhanced signal channels designed to boost measurement accuracy across various finger sizes and skin tones.

One of the standout features is Health Radar, a system for background biometric monitoring. It tracks bodily changes and alerts users to potentially important trends before they escalate into serious issues. Building on this, the Blood Pressure Signals function analyzes nighttime blood pressure patterns and can flag signs of increased cardiovascular strain.

Oura stresses the importance of nighttime readings, noting that during sleep, metrics are less influenced by stress, activity, caffeine, and other daytime factors. Normally, blood pressure drops at night, and if it consistently doesn't, that may be an early indicator of cardiovascular risk. However, the ring isn't a replacement for a doctor or a medical-grade monitor; it simply helps users identify when to seek further evaluation.

Another component of Health Radar is Nighttime Breathing. This feature provides a 30-day overview of breathing during sleep, detects irregularities, and explains how they might affect rest quality and overall health. Additionally, Oura has integrated support for medical data via Health Records, introduced GLP-1 Insights for users taking those medications, and partnered with Counsel Health to offer direct support within the app.

The Oura Ring 5 is now available for pre-order. Black and silver versions cost $399, while gold, stealth, brushed silver, and deep rose options are priced at $499. Full functionality still requires an Oura Membership subscription at $5.99 per month or $69.99 per year. With the rise of the Apple Watch and other wearables, the new ring seems like Oura's bid to demonstrate that a compact form factor can be just as effective a health-monitoring tool as a smartwatch.
