OpenAI is preparing a major update to ChatGPT that will push the service beyond the traditional chatbot format. According to the Financial Times, the company plans to revamp its web and mobile apps in the coming weeks, making ChatGPT more like a super-app with access to various AI tools.

The new interface will emphasize Codex, OpenAI’s coding tool, as well as agent functions that can perform tasks on behalf of the user. Instead of remaining a conversation window with the model, ChatGPT is meant to become the entry point to a suite of services: from image generation and code work to third-party applications and automated assistants.

One reason for this shift is money. ChatGPT has amassed a huge audience since its launch in 2022, but most users still take advantage of the free tier. With a potential IPO on the horizon, OpenAI needs to show investors a clearer revenue growth model. As a result, the company increasingly sees ChatGPT not as a finished product, but as a channel to promote more expensive and valuable tools.

Inside the company, the belief is that the future isn’t about simple back-and-forth messaging with a bot, but about a personal AI agent that helps users with work and personal tasks, understands context, and picks the right tools automatically. Thibaud Sottiaux, head of core product and platform at OpenAI, described the future ChatGPT as a system that should go beyond its current limits. In his view, the goal is to create a personal agent capable of assisting users with almost everything, from workflows to daily chores.

OpenAI is also paying close attention to corporate clients. Business users already account for about 40% of the company’s revenue, and OpenAI expects that share to reach 50% by the end of the year. Accordingly, the future ChatGPT will likely push users toward paid professional tools, task automation, and integrations that can generate more revenue than a basic chatbot subscription.
