Android 17 Coming to Pixel 6 and Newer: What to Expect

Google is expected to roll out Android 17 this week, but not all Pixel smartphones will get the update. Under the company's device support policy, the new OS will be limited to the Pixel 6 and newer models. Owners of the Pixel 5, Pixel 5a 5G, Pixel 4, Pixel 4a, and older devices will miss out.

The list of phones that won't receive Android 17 includes the Pixel 5, Pixel 5a 5G, Pixel 4 and 4 XL, Pixel 4a and 4a 5G, the entire Pixel 3 lineup, Pixel 2, and the original Pixel and Pixel XL. For these models, Android 16 is essentially the last major OS version — barring unofficial ROMs or third-party builds.

Android 17 is being hailed as one of the biggest Android updates in recent years. The key focus is on deeper integration of Gemini Intelligence into the system. Instead of being a separate app, Gemini will become a more active system assistant, capable of working with apps, automating tasks, creating UI elements, and helping with multi-step workflows.

Among the expected features are native app locking, more granular privacy settings, and limited contact access. This means apps will be able to request temporary or one-time access only to specific contacts, rather than the entire address book. Android 17 is also expected to bring back separate toggles for Wi-Fi and mobile data, a feature many users have long asked for.

The update will extend the 'bubbles' mode to all apps, letting users keep multiple floating windows on top of full-screen content. Combined with better multitasking, a refreshed visual design, and new AI capabilities, Android 17 promises to be more than just an annual refresh — it's a significant step forward for the entire ecosystem.

For owners of older Pixels, missing out on Android 17 might be a reason to consider upgrading. That's especially true for those who want the new Gemini features, enhanced privacy controls, and system-level changes that Google is now focusing on newer hardware.
