The Android 17 update for Pixel phones has turned out less smooth than expected. After installing the new system version, users have already run into several noticeable problems: Google apps misbehaving on Wi-Fi, lost 5G connectivity, and now unreliable touchscreen input. Because of that, Pixel owners who have not updated yet may want to wait for the next Android 17 build.
The first issue appears to be tied to Android 17 requiring IPv6. If it is not enabled on the router, YouTube, Gmail, Google Play Store, Google Keep, Google Photos, and the web version of Google Messages may stop working properly on Pixel phones. These failures should not appear when using mobile data without Wi-Fi, while owners of compatible routers are advised to enable IPv6 in the settings.
Users then noticed that after installing Android 17, 5G disappeared on some phones. One possible workaround is to open Settings, go to System, then Repair mode, choose Enter repair mode, and reboot the device. But the latest complaints are just as frustrating: Pixel owners say on social media that after the update, the touchscreen sometimes misreads gestures, scrolls the interface in the wrong direction, or fails to register taps at all.
Some users tried clearing the Pixel Launcher cache through Settings, Apps, See all apps, Pixel Launcher, Storage & cache, and Clear cache, but that did not help most of them. Another option is to boot the phone in safe mode and check whether the problem disappears. If the touchscreen works normally there, a third-party app may be to blame. One more temporary workaround is to turn off Smooth Display under Display & touch, lowering the screen refresh rate to 60Hz.
Complaints are already being filed in Google IssueTracker. According to user reports, the problem affects the Pixel 10, Pixel 9, Pixel 8, and Pixel 7 series, while the Pixel 6, despite also receiving Android 17, does not yet appear to be widely affected by this bug. Beyond the touchscreen issue, less common glitches have also appeared, such as widgets disappearing from the home screen. Battery life reports are mixed: Pixel 10 owners more often mention shorter runtime, while Pixel 7 to Pixel 9 users mostly notice improvements after the update. The original report did not list prices.
