Sony has limited purchases of the removable disc drive for PS5 Digital Edition and PS5 Pro. The product page on PlayStation Direct now says that, due to high demand, there is a limit of one unit per order. The accessory costs $79 and is aimed at players who still want to run physical game copies or watch movies from discs.

The drive can run supported PS5 and PS4 games on Blu-ray Disc, and it can also play movies on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD. It has become especially important for owners of PS5 Pro: that console ships without a built-in drive, so physical discs work only after buying the separate module. An internet connection is required for the first pairing of the drive with the console.

The restriction appeared shortly after Sony confirmed PlayStation’s gradual move toward digital releases. From January 2028, new games for PlayStation consoles will no longer be released on physical discs: they will be sold through PlayStation Store and retail stores only in digital form. Disc games that have already been released, along with releases planned before that date, are not covered by the new rules.

Sony also says that game discs released before January 2028 will continue to work on supported consoles. The same notice now appears on the removable disc drive page. In practice, the accessory becomes especially important for anyone who has already built a physical game library or plans to buy disc releases before they disappear.

The jump in demand for the drives is not surprising: many players met Sony’s decision to stop new physical games with little enthusiasm. The PS5 line is already effectively built around digital models with an optional drive, and now that drive has suddenly become the accessory everyone wants.
