Apple is preparing several notable changes for CarPlay in iOS 27. The update will cover entertainment, voice control, navigation and wireless connection stability. Some features will depend on support from automakers, while the new Siri AI will require an iPhone that supports Apple Intelligence.
One of the biggest additions will be video in CarPlay. Compatible apps will be able to show clips directly on the vehicle display, but only when the car is parked. If the driver starts moving during playback, the system will automatically switch to audio mode. Apps with AirPlay support will also be able to send video to the in-car screen, although the automaker must enable the feature.
CarPlay will also gain a smarter Siri AI. The assistant will be able to search for information and handle tasks during a trip. Conversations started in CarPlay will sync with the Siri app on iPhone, allowing users to continue them later. Apple Maps will also better understand natural voice requests, such as asking for a route without toll roads or highways.
The media experience will become more convenient as well. Audio and media apps will get a persistent mini-player with artwork and controls, while the Now Playing interface will add a progress bar for jumping to a specific point in a song, podcast or audiobook. CarPlay will also receive new iOS 27 wallpapers, larger interactive content previews and refreshed Liquid Glass-style icons.
Navigation apps such as Apple Maps and Google Maps will be able to share route data with the vehicle. This will help the onboard system estimate remaining range more accurately, analyze the trip and suggest charging stops for an electric car. Apple also promises more reliable wireless CarPlay, improved GPS accuracy and better heading detection.
