Samsung may change the launch order of its most unusual foldable devices. According to rumors, the company is still working on Galaxy Z TriFold 2, but rising costs and manufacturing complexity could push back its release. As a result, a model with a rollable display may arrive before the new tri-fold smartphone.

Insider Lanzuk claims that Galaxy Z TriFold 2 will use an updated hinge. The new design is said to reduce thickness differences between parts of the mechanism, potentially making the phone lighter and more compact. That matters for this type of device: the first Galaxy Z TriFold weighs 309 g, so even a modest reduction would improve comfort.

At the same time, the complexity of the design and component costs may delay the second-generation TriFold. Samsung has reportedly not abandoned the project, but the phone could launch later than initially expected. The final decision will depend on production cost, reliability and manufacturing readiness.

Meanwhile, Samsung is said to have accelerated development of its first smartphone with a sliding design. Earlier reports pointed to no launch before early 2028, but sources now allow for a debut as early as 2027. The device could use a rollable or extendable OLED panel from Samsung Display, turning a compact phone into a device with a nearly tablet-sized screen.

Samsung Display has already shown similar concepts, including Flex Hybrid and Rollable Flex. Instead of folding the screen in half, they expand the usable area with a sliding mechanism. If such a phone really arrives before Galaxy Z TriFold 2, it could open a new chapter in Samsung’s experiments with mobile form factors.
