Sony's new analog stick patent could make controller drift less common

Sony Interactive Entertainment has patented an analog stick design with contactless tilt detection. The technology could potentially reduce the risk of stick drift — unintended cursor or character movement that often appears as the mechanical parts in traditional potentiometers wear down.

The documentation describes a sensor that determines the stick's position without directly touching the mechanism's moving section. Sony says this approach could maintain highly accurate motion detection even after prolonged use. The design also prevents the shaft from rotating unintentionally while tilted.

The operating principle resembles magnetic sensors used in Hall-effect sticks and newer TMR modules from third-party manufacturers. Because the sensing element does not touch the moving parts, it is less exposed to physical wear. Sony does not explicitly describe the patented technology as TMR.

The company also includes a spring mechanism that returns the stick to its neutral position, along with additional stabilizing elements. These are intended to improve control accuracy and reduce deviations after long-term use. DualSense Edge takes a different approach to wear: owners can replace the entire stick module.

The patent does not mean the new design will necessarily appear in a PlayStation 6 controller or reach mass production at all. Sony regularly registers experimental ideas that never make it into commercial products. Still, the document shows that the company is exploring ways to eliminate one of the main wear-prone components in modern gamepads.
