Many modern smartphones look almost indestructible. Manufacturers promise protection from dust and water, proudly list IP67, IP68 or even IP69, and show devices in rain, near pools or around splashes. That makes it easy to assume such a phone can safely be dropped into water, taken to the beach or used for underwater filming.

That is where the main trap appears. A high IP rating does not mean a smartphone is waterproof in the everyday sense. It only confirms that the device passed specific laboratory tests under strictly defined conditions. Real life rarely looks like a laboratory.

So taking an IP68 smartphone swimming is a bad idea. It may survive an accidental drop into water, but that does not mean it is safe in a pool, the sea, a bathtub or under a shower jet.

What an IP rating actually means

IP stands for Ingress Protection, a rating that describes how well an enclosure resists solid particles and moisture.

In a code such as IP68, the first digit indicates protection from solid particles, including dust. The maximum value is 6, which means a high level of dust protection. The second digit indicates water protection. Different levels cover different kinds of exposure: drops, splashes, jets, temporary immersion or pressurised water.

If the first digit is replaced by X, as in IPX8, dust protection was not tested or declared. Water protection can still be high. The numbers look simple, but IP68 is more complicated than it seems.

Why IP68 can be misleading

IP68 is often mistaken for complete waterproofing. In reality, IPX7 describes a fairly specific test: immersion in water up to 1 metre for up to 30 minutes. IPX8 is different. It covers immersion deeper than 1 metre, but the exact conditions are largely defined by the manufacturer.

That is why two IP68 smartphones can offer different real protection. One may be tested to 2 metres, another to 4 metres and a third to 6 metres. The label is the same even though the test conditions differ.

Different iPhone models with IP68 are also rated for different immersion depths and limited periods. The rating may match, but the safety margin does not. It is therefore important to check the conditions stated by the manufacturer instead of treating IP68 as a universal waterproof guarantee.

Laboratory water is not a pool or the sea

IP tests take place under controlled conditions. They usually involve clean fresh water, calm immersion, a defined temperature and a new, undamaged device.

Real water can be salty, chlorinated, hot, dirty or soapy. It can move, press against the enclosure and enter ports at an angle or with force. A phone may also hit a sink, tile, rock or pool floor before it gets wet.

Seawater is especially dangerous because salt can accelerate corrosion and leave deposits. Pool water contains chlorine and other chemicals. Baths and showers add shampoo, soap and hot steam. These are not the conditions used for standard IP testing.

An IP68 phone may therefore survive an accidental fall into clean water but still be damaged while swimming in the sea or recording video in a pool.

A new smartphone is better protected than an old one

Another important detail is that testing is performed on a new device. In daily use, a phone is dropped, heated by the sun, cooled in winter and exposed to small impacts and vibration.

Even when the enclosure looks intact, microscopic deformation may develop. Seals age, adhesives lose strength, the frame can shift and the glass or body may suffer invisible damage. All of this affects water resistance.

A case does not restore factory sealing. It may reduce impact damage, but after a fall the original IP protection can no longer be assumed.

A phone that could tolerate brief immersion on its first day may be damaged by a short fall into a sink after two years of use.

Why warranties often exclude water damage

Many manufacturers advertise water resistance while excluding liquid damage from warranty coverage. That may seem contradictory, but the company cannot reliably reconstruct the conditions of exposure.

A device may have fallen briefly into clean water, spent an hour in a pool, contacted seawater, been used in a hot shower or already been damaged. These circumstances are difficult to establish with certainty.

In practice, an IP rating is useful protection against accidents, not a promise of free repair after any contact with liquid.

What about IP69?

IP69 may sound like the obvious solution, but it describes another type of test.

The rating is associated with powerful high-pressure, high-temperature water jets. That matters for equipment used in harsh environments or cleaned under pressure.

IP69 does not automatically mean better protection during prolonged immersion. A device may withstand hot pressurised jets without being suitable for swimming or underwater video.

In other words, IP69 is not simply IP68 made better in every way. It addresses a different exposure scenario, so even an IP69 smartphone should stay out of the pool.

How to treat smartphone water resistance

It is best to view IP68 as protection against an accident, not as a feature for regular underwater use. A high rating improves the chances of surviving rain, a spill or a brief fall into a sink, but deliberate immersion is still risky.

Do not film underwater in a pool, rinse the phone under a tap, take it into the shower or leave it beside seawater. Surviving once does not guarantee surviving again.

If the phone gets wet, switch it off, wipe it with a soft dry cloth and let it dry. Do not charge it until the port is fully dry, and do not use a hair dryer or radiator because excess heat can cause more damage.

Conclusion

IP68 is an important and useful specification. It shows that the device has been tested for dust and water resistance, but the rating is often interpreted too literally.

It does not make a smartphone an underwater camera or guarantee protection from salt water, chlorine, hot showers, soap, drops, ageing seals or body damage. It also does not guarantee free repair after liquid exposure.

The simplest rule is this: the less water a smartphone sees, the longer it is likely to last. Water resistance is reassurance for an accident, not an invitation to experiment.
