Samsung is considering using silicon-carbon batteries in future Galaxy S27 smartphones. According to ITHome, Mobile Experience executive vice president Moon Seong-hoon discussed the possibility during a meeting with journalists in London. Samsung first introduced this type of battery in the Galaxy Z Fold8, Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra and Galaxy Z Flip8. Silicon-carbon technology offers higher energy density, allowing manufacturers to increase capacity without making devices noticeably thicker or heavier.
Samsung managed to fit larger batteries into the two new book-style foldables than in the Galaxy Z Fold7. The Galaxy Z Flip8 kept the same battery capacity as its predecessor, but the phone itself became thinner. Chinese manufacturers have already adopted silicon-carbon cells on a wider scale, while Samsung continued relying on more traditional solutions for longer.
Asked whether the technology could appear in the Galaxy S27, the Samsung executive said the decision would depend on how the battery affects the user experience and the requirements of each product. Earlier leaks suggest the company is already testing such batteries, and the Galaxy S27 Ultra could receive a capacity of around 5,500 mAh instead of the familiar 5,000 mAh. Samsung has not confirmed those specifications.
Samsung is also continuing the development of a smartphone with a rollable display. The company sees the technology as a long-term direction and is working to make it mature enough for a commercial launch. Unofficial reports suggest the first model could arrive in the first half of 2028, although Samsung has not announced a final timeline.
