Samsung Display tests CTG glass with a thinner center for less visible creases

Samsung Display develops CTG glass to reduce foldable screen creases

Samsung Display is developing new CTG protective glass for foldable displays that could make the crease less noticeable. Insider Ice Universe reported the project, citing Korean media. CTG stands for Center Etched Thin Glass, a thin glass layer with an etched central zone.

Modern foldable screens use ultra-thin UTG glass, which usually has the same thickness across its entire surface. This design provides good rigidity and a smooth surface, but the center is repeatedly stressed during folding. Over time, that can make the crease more visible.

With CTG, the central section would be made thinner through precise chemical etching, while the edges would remain thicker. This should make the folding area more flexible while the rest of the surface continues to support and protect the display.

According to Ice Universe, the structure could reduce mechanical stress and residual deformation after unfolding, slowing the development of a pronounced crease during long-term use. CTG could also reduce the need for extra reinforcing layers and help manufacturers build thinner foldable devices.

One of the main challenges will be keeping optical properties consistent across the screen. Differences in glass thickness could affect reflections, create a visible boundary or produce a slight unevenness. Transparent materials with the right refractive index, strength and folding durability may also be required to level the surface.

The technology is still under development, and no timeline for mass-produced devices has been announced. If Samsung Display solves the manufacturing and optical issues, CTG could become the next step after the industry moved from CPI polymer covers to ultra-thin UTG glass.
