Nvidia’s $1B stake in Nokia targets AI-RAN and 5G/6G

Nvidia has announced a $1 billion investment in Nokia, acquiring 166.4 million new shares of the Finnish company. Once the deal closes, Nvidia will hold a 2.9% stake in Nokia. The telecom group plans to channel the funds into next-generation networks, artificial intelligence technologies, and cloud solutions, with a particular focus on speeding up 5G and 6G development based on Nvidia’s architecture. The stake may be modest, but the direction is unambiguous: the bet is on AI-driven infrastructure.

The partnership also extends to joint work on AI-RAN, a network technology where artificial intelligence controls resource and traffic allocation. T-Mobile U.S. will be the first operator to trial the system, with tests slated for 2026 and aimed at improving network performance and energy efficiency.

Nokia’s president and CEO Justin Hotard said the partnership with Nvidia and the investment in Nokia would accelerate AI-RAN innovation with the goal of putting AI in everyone’s pocket. The message reinforces the shared ambition to bring intelligence closer to the edge of mobile networks.
