Atari 2600+ Pac-Man Edition: features, price, nostalgia

Atari has unveiled a new take on its retro console, the Atari 2600+ Pac-Man Edition, finished in a bold yellow. Created with Plaion Replai and Namco, the model pays tribute to Pac-Man, a symbol of the video game golden age. The all-yellow shell feels like a playful nod to the character and sets the tone immediately.

The unit echoes the look of the late-1970s Atari 2600 while being fully adapted for modern televisions. It supports original Atari 2600 and 7800 cartridges, and the package includes the exclusive Pac-Man: Double Feature 2-in-1 with two versions of the classic. That makes it feel ready to play the moment it’s connected.

Staying true to the original, the 2600+ is a fully cartridge-based system aimed first at collectors and retro-gaming fans. Among the contemporary touches are HDMI output, power over USB-C, and support for 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios. The blend of old-school media and modern convenience is exactly what many nostalgia-minded players are looking for.

However, the console has no USB ports or SD-card slots, so running third-party games or ROM files requires a dedicated flash cartridge. It’s a purist choice that keeps the physical-cartridge ritual intact, even if it adds an extra step for tinkerers.

The Atari 2600+ Pac-Man Edition is priced at $169 and comes with a yellow wireless Pac-Man CX-40+ joystick. Additional gamepads in the ghosts’ colors—red (Blinky), pink (Pinky), blue (Inky), and orange (Clyde)—are available at $39 each. According to Atari CEO Wade Rosen, the edition is intended to celebrate the shared legacy of Atari and Pac-Man and to embody the enduring thrill of the chase that has inspired generations of players. The message suits the hardware: nostalgia wrapped in a bright, unmistakable hue.
