Samsung to appeal $191.4M verdict in Pictiva OLED patent suit

Samsung found itself in a patent battle with Ireland’s Pictiva over OLED display technology. A Texas jury concluded that Samsung infringed two U.S. patents and ordered it to pay Pictiva $191.4 million. The company signaled its displeasure with the verdict and said it plans to challenge it.

Filed in 2023, Pictiva’s lawsuit centers on OLED methods aimed at improving resolution, brightness, and power efficiency—techniques the firm says Samsung used without permission in Galaxy smartphones, TVs, and wearables. Samsung rejected the allegations, arguing the patents are invalid. Jurors ultimately found infringement on two of the five patents at issue.

The split decision leaves room for both sides to frame the outcome: Pictiva secured a significant award, while Samsung avoided liability on most of the asserted claims.

Pictiva holds hundreds of OLED patents and is a subsidiary of Key Patent Innovations. Many of the technologies trace back to work developed at OSRAM in the early 2000s. Managing director Angela Quinlan said the verdict affirmed the strength of the company’s intellectual property.

Samsung, for its part, confirmed it will appeal and has already filed petitions with the USPTO to invalidate the disputed patents. The case remains active, and the final outcome will be determined after the appeals are reviewed. The fight underscores how contested OLED know-how has become across consumer electronics.
