AMD has unexpectedly secured licenses to export its Instinct MI308 AI chips to China, while NVIDIA still lacks approval to ship its H20. The company disclosed the development during its third-quarter report.
AMD CEO Lisa Su said some MI308 units have already received export authorization. Even so, the company does not plan to factor potential earnings from China into its fourth-quarter revenue outlook, describing the environment as fluid and uncertain.
The exact specifications of the Instinct MI308 have not yet been revealed. Industry sources say they are likely to be close to NVIDIA’s H20, in line with U.S. export restrictions on artificial intelligence technologies. Securing the licenses stands out as a notable win for AMD, particularly as NVIDIA has faced delays and supply constraints in China. Still, it feels more like groundwork than a turning point.
Even so, analysts note that both companies continue to face headwinds in China, where Beijing is actively promoting domestic AI solutions. For now, neither NVIDIA nor AMD expects meaningful shipment growth until new regulatory changes emerge.
