Canon has officially introduced the new full-frame mirrorless EOS R6 III, pushing the R6 series to a new tier with higher resolution, faster burst shooting, and more advanced video capabilities. The camera adopts a 32.5‑megapixel sensor and records 7K RAW video, yet skips a stacked sensor—unlike rival offerings from Sony and Panasonic—an omission that stands out but doesn’t overshadow the ambitious spec sheet.
The headline change is a 32.5MP CMOS sensor replacing the 24MP chip from the R6 II. The R6 III captures photos at up to 40 frames per second with the electronic shutter or 12 fps with the mechanical one. A 0.5‑second pre-shooting buffer helps catch critical moments—useful, for instance, when photographing wildlife. Autofocus is handled by Dual Pixel AF with new AI-driven algorithms and the Digic X processor, designed to keep focus quick and confident even in low light.
Video takes center stage. The EOS R6 III records 7K RAW at 60 fps, 7K “open gate” at 30 fps, and 4K at up to 120 fps, with support for Canon C‑Log2 and C‑Log3 profiles. Image stabilization has been strengthened to offer up to 8.5 stops of compensation, while CFexpress cards enable RAW video capture and sustain rapid continuous shooting. On paper, that combination should appeal to hybrid shooters who value flexibility in post-production.
The design sticks to Canon’s well‑known ergonomics: an easy‑to‑handle body with three control dials, a fully articulating screen, a joystick, and a photo/video mode selector. Connectivity includes USB‑C, a full‑size HDMI port, and separate inputs for a microphone and headphones. Alongside the camera, Canon unveiled the RF45mm f/1.2 STM lens, weighing just 346 grams and priced at $470—a compact, intriguing addition to the RF lineup.
The Canon EOS R6 III goes on sale at the end of the month for $2,799 body‑only, or $4,049 with the RF24‑105mm F4 L IS USM. It goes head‑to‑head with the Nikon Z6 III, Panasonic Lumix S1 II, and Sony A7 IV, promising finer detail and greater flexibility for video work. The lack of a stacked sensor may raise a few questions, but the resolution bump and robust recording modes look well aimed at creators who need one camera to do it all.
