Gemini AI in Google Maps: voice control, landmark guidance, traffic alerts

Google has announced the integration of its Gemini AI into Google Maps, aiming to make navigation smarter and more driver-friendly. The updated app introduces a conversational mode that lets people talk to Maps by voice without touching the screen, which should help keep attention where it belongs — on the road.

With Gemini on board, users can ask about places along the route, search for EV charging stations, share their estimated arrival time with contacts, and even add tasks to the calendar. For example, a driver might request an affordable vegan spot on the way or inquire about parking near a destination; Maps would offer suitable options and then set the route by voice command. In practice, these small time-savers reduce distractions and streamline the trip.

The update also brings landmark-based guidance. Instead of routine prompts about turning in a certain number of meters, the navigator can refer to familiar cues — for instance, indicating a right turn after the Thai Siam restaurant. This is enabled by Google Maps data analysis combined with Street View imagery. Directions rooted in real-world reference points are simply easier to follow.

Gemini can now warn about traffic jams ahead of time via Proactive traffic alerts, a feature rolling out first to Android users in the United States. Early notice like this tends to spare drivers from avoidable bottlenecks.

Another addition lets you point the camera at places along the way to get information about them, making it possible to check ratings and reviews while you travel. It subtly shifts Maps from pure navigation toward on-the-spot discovery — handy when choosing where to stop without breaking your stride.
