Years of talk about AI progress being throttled by a shortage of graphics processors now seem to be in the rearview mirror. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said on the Bg2 podcast, which also featured Sam Altman, that the company no longer faces a critical dependence on accelerator supplies. In his view, the real bottleneck isn’t chips anymore, but access to electricity.
Nadella noted that Microsoft has already accumulated accelerators it simply cannot switch on—there is no spare capacity in existing data centers. The hardware may be ready, yet there’s nowhere to plug it in because facilities are hitting power grid limits. The primary challenge is not securing NVIDIA GPUs, but building or gaining entry to data centers with enough grid throughput to keep them running.
This pivot feels especially abrupt compared with a year ago, when the conversation centered on a global GPU shortage and multi-year delivery queues. Now the pace of AI is defined by energy infrastructure, regulatory constraints, and the rising power draw of compute clusters. The largest data centers already consume as much electricity as small cities, and demand keeps climbing.
These new conditions are pushing cloud providers to rethink their playbook: sign long-term power contracts, develop their own generation, and even invest in small modular nuclear reactors. In the near term, the edge goes not to whoever buys the most accelerators, but to whoever can keep them consistently powered.
According to Nadella, the era of racing for GPUs is over. The contest now is for electricity—a prerequisite without which large-scale AI simply cannot operate.
