Fresh details have surfaced about Canis, the processor expected to power Sony’s next portable PlayStation. According to data published by insider Moore's Law is Dead, the device is set to ship with a six-core CPU combining four Zen 6c cores and two Zen 6 Low Power cores, alongside RDNA 5 graphics with 16 compute units. The GPU is reportedly clocked at 1.2 GHz in handheld use and up to 1.65 GHz when docked.
The console will support up to 48 GB of fast LPDDR5X-8533 memory, though the retail configuration may be smaller. Experts suggest Sony should have no trouble fitting the device with 40 GB of RAM. Based on preliminary cost calculations, the bill of materials would allow a price window of $549 to $699, though the final sticker could climb by the time it launches. The figures hint at a configuration that favors headroom over compromise.
Gaming capability is the headline. Canis is said to deliver up to 75% of PlayStation 5 performance when rendering in docked mode, with ray tracing running 2.6 times faster. Backward compatibility with PS4 and PS5 is expected to remain, although some titles may need patches for a seamless start. If these targets hold, the handheld is aiming unusually high for a mobile form factor while keeping one foot firmly in the existing library.
There’s another telling clue: a recent PlayStation firmware beta mentioned a low-power mode for the home console. Experts believe this could lay the groundwork for testing games under stricter power limits—exactly the kind of conditions a portable would need to handle. Taken together, the signals suggest the platform is already being shaped with real-world constraints in mind.
